OXFORD, Ala. – No. 3 UWF Baseball will compete in the for the Gulf South Conference tournament title Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. The Argos will play the winner of Valdosta State vs. Delta State, which will take place at 11:00 a.m. at Choccolocco Park.
UWF fell to Delta State 9-1 on Monday afternoon in the fourth game of the tournament. Jared Hatch (1-4) suffered the loss after pitching into the third as the starter. Matthew Estrada and Isaac Phillips each finished with two hits. Matthew Jones picked up the only RBI of the game for UWF. The win kept Delta State alive and set up a showdown with Valdosta State, which beat West Georgia earlier in the day in extra innings, for a berth in the championship game.
“We just didn’t get the job done [against Delta State],” said UWF head coach Mike Jeffcoat. “But our team put ourselves in a position to be in the championship game tomorrow… I just told the guys after the game exactly that: that we’re still playing for a Gulf South Conference championship.”
The Argonauts were the only team to complete the weekend 3-0. The ideal start guaranteed the team a spot on the tournament’s final day and a shot to take the title.
The Argos rose to No. 3 in the latest iteration of the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll released Monday. Colorado Mesa topped the poll. The ranking was the highest of the year for UWF Baseball in either the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll or the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association poll.
The Argos also topped the NCBWA South Region poll, checking in at No. 1 with seven first place votes. Tampa came in at No. 2.
Andrew Vaccacio (6-1), the GSC Pitcher of the Year, is expected to start the championship game for UWF.
